Transcript: „"Hello and welcome back. Today we're talking about how to keep color-treated hair shiny and vibrant for longer in the fall. When coloring, the outer layer of the hair, the cuticle, is opened to allow color pigments to penetrate the hair shaft. Afterward, the hair is more porous and fragile. This makes it easier for pigments to be lost. This becomes a particular problem in the fall: cold, damp outdoor air meets dry indoor heating. At the same time, the UV radiation from the summer is often still lingering in the hair. Both of these factors promote dryness and cause the color to fade more quickly. What helps? Use a mild shampoo specifically formulated for color-treated hair, ideally with a low sulfate content. Follow up with a conditioner after every wash and a hair mask about once a week. Also, wash with lukewarm water rather than very hot water. This protects the hair structure and color. Heat protection is also essential. Blow-dryers and straighteners put additional stress on color-treated hair – so always protect it beforehand. If the color still becomes dull, a color refresh at the salon or a color-refreshing product for home use can restore its brilliance. My conclusion:" The right shampoo, sufficient moisture, less heat, and consistent heat protection make the biggest difference. This will keep your hair color shiny, vibrant, and healthy for longer. Thanks for listening, and see you next time.“
Colored hair looks best when freshly dyed – and then often fades faster than desired. This is especially common in autumn. Heated air, temperature fluctuations and the after-effects of UV exposure They both challenge color structure and hair moisture. The good news: This can be prevented with the right care routine.
What happens to hair when you dye it – and why color fades
When hair is colored, the outer layer of the hair, the cuticle, opens to allow color pigments to penetrate deep into the hair. This chemical process puts stress on the hair structure: The cuticle closes again afterward, but remains more porous than in untreated hair. This has a direct consequence: Color pigments can leak out more easily. – especially if the care is inadequate.
Hot water, harsh shampoos, dry air from heating systems, and UV exposure open the hair cuticle and release color pigments. The drier the hair, the faster the color loses its vibrancy.
Hair is more sensitive after coloring than before. Using the right care products now will noticeably extend the life of the color – without any additional salon appointments.
Why autumn is particularly stressful for colored hair
In autumn, two extremes collide: cold, damp outdoor air and dry, heated air in homes and offices. This constant change draws moisture from the hair – and when the hair dries out, the cuticle opens more. Color pigments then evaporate more quickly than in wetter months.
In addition, there is the so-called After-effect of summerUV rays directly attack color pigments and make the hair structurally drier. This damage often only becomes apparent in early autumn – when the humidity decreases and the hair hasn't had time to recover.
Heated air & dry room air
Heated air has very low humidity. The hair loses moisture, the cuticle opens more – color pigments escape faster than in the more humid summer season.
After-effects of UV exposure
Sunlight in summer directly attacks color pigments and dries out the hair structure. This effect often becomes apparent with a delay – and is intensified in autumn due to dryness.
Temperature fluctuations
The constant change between cold outside and warm inside puts stress on the hair fiber. The hair expands and contracts – colored hair is more sensitive to this than untreated hair.
The right care routine for colored hair in autumn
Colored hair doesn't need elaborate care in autumn – but it does require some attention. conscious and consistent. These four building blocks make the biggest difference:
Use a color-protecting shampoo: Regular shampoos containing sulfates roughen the cuticle and dissolve color pigments. A low-sulfate shampoo specifically for color-treated hair cleanses gently and protects the color at the same time.
Add moisture regularly: Conditioner after every wash, plus an intensive hair mask once a week. In autumn, this isn't a luxury – it's necessary to retain color pigments in the hair.
Lukewarm water instead of hot: Hot water opens the cuticle and dissolves color pigments. Lukewarm water cleanses just as well – but is much gentler on the hair color. A quick cold rinse at the end closes the cuticle and adds shine.
Heat protection while styling: Hair dryers, straighteners, and curling irons put stress on already damaged hair. Heat protection is not an optional extra for color-treated hair – it actively protects the color structure.
Washing less frequently noticeably extends the life of the color. Colored hair doesn't need to be washed daily – two to three times a week is often sufficient and protects the color and structure.

Autumn skincare routine: This is what a week looks like
A clear routine helps to consistently care for color-treated hair in the fall – without any effort. This weekly routine is deliberately kept simple:
First wash of the week: Color-protecting shampoo (e.g., Color Regain or Color Save C1), lukewarm water, conditioner in lengths and ends.
Second wash + intensive care: Shampoo as usual, then apply a hair mask (Color Regain Mask or Color Save Mask C3) and leave on for 5–10 minutes. Rinse with cold water for added shine.
Optional: third wash: A quick wash with shampoo, followed by a bi-phase conditioner as a leave-in – that's it. No fuss, maximum color protection.
Daily: Use heat protection before styling, always prefer lukewarm water, and compensate for heated air with a humidifier if possible.
When is a color refresh at the salon worthwhile?
Even the best at-home hair care routine has its limits. If, despite good care, the color appears significantly duller, gray tones become visible, or the shade has shifted, a professional color refresh is advisable.
It doesn't always have to be a complete color change: A partial color refresh Touching up only the roots or the areas where the color has faded the most is usually much faster and cheaper. And the effect is still immediately visible.
- The color appears significantly more matte than immediately after dyeing.
- Gray areas have become visible
- The color tone has noticeably shifted (e.g., blonde becomes more yellowish, brown more reddish)
- Your hair feels dry and brittle, even though you condition it regularly.
- More than 8–10 weeks have passed since the last coloring.

In the salon, we will discuss together which treatment best suits your color and hair type – whether a complete new coloring, a partial refresh or a nourishing color shine treatment.
✨ Book an appointmentFAQ: Frequently asked questions about colored hair in autumn
At least 48 hours. During this time, the color pigments stabilize in the hair. Washing your hair immediately after coloring risks washing out some of the pigments before they have fully set.
Yes, in moderation. Dry shampoo between washes can help reduce the frequency of washing your hair – and thus preserve the color for longer. Important: do not use it as a permanent solution, as excessive use can irritate the scalp.
For blonde and light brown hair, a no-yellow shampoo can help neutralize unwanted yellow and orange tones. It shouldn't be used every time you wash your hair, but rather once or twice a week – depending on the intensity of the discoloration.
Absolutely – and especially for color-treated hair in autumn, heat protection is more important than usual. Color-treated hair is already stressed by the chemical process. Heat without protection intensifies moisture loss and accelerates color fading.
In autumn, use at least once a week. For very dry or damaged hair, twice a week may be beneficial. Important: Apply the mask only to the lengths and ends – not the roots – and leave it on for a sufficient amount of time (5–10 minutes).
Conclusion: Preserving color is easier than you think
Colored hair fades faster in autumn – but this isn't inevitable. With the right shampoo, sufficient moisture, lukewarm water temperatures, and consistent heat protection, you can noticeably extend the life of your color.
The biggest difference doesn't come from elaborate treatments, but from consistent small decisions in everyday life: choosing the right product, reducing the temperature when washing, and using a face mask once a week. That's all it takes.
Hair color that is well cared for lasts longer – and the hair stays healthier. Both of these things together are the best reason for a conscious autumn routine.
